Walkoff. And God bless you Mr. Robinson.

I find it appropriate that on the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in MLB, that the last player wearing #42 played such an important role in the outcome of his team's game today.

Mariano Rivera, the "GREAT" Mariano Rivera has had the number 42 his entire career with the Yankees. When MLB retired the number in 1997, it allowed anyone wearing that number to continue to do so until they retired. Rivera is the last of the bunch, and today, well, today was a GOOD day.

Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the 9th, Rivera took the ball and prepared to send the lowly A's home in shame. A hit, a walk, and a walk off home run by Marco Scutaro put an end to that nonsense. First time this year I have yelled during a game not involving the Red Sox. I made it to April 15, which sets a personal record for me.

As my friend Kelly said, he took so long to get to first, you hoped he remembered how to get around the other 2 to reach home plate: he's probably getting one between the numbers the next time the two team's play, but like my Pop said, it's worth it.

If anything can soothe the fact the Sox got rained out, it's Rivera gacking up the game in the bottom of the 9th. Add on the fact the Yankees put Mussina AND Pavano on the DL today and you have the makings of a REALLY good day.

In all seriousness, today marks a special day: the day a man of color stepped onto a major league field for the first time. Like the MLB special said, without Mr. Robinson, we don't get Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Willy Mays, Willie McCovey, and Ken Griffey Jr. Not to mention Rickey Henderson, Kirby Puckett, Barry Bonds, and Reggie Jackson. The courage it took for this man to do what he did is something not many of us could fathom.

So, hats off to you Jackie. And thanks.

& here in NYC, it was really something, listening to Yankees Announcer, John Sterling, his voice sounding so surprised & SUBDUED, simultaneously, that it was truly-entertaining, especially broadcast moments like these.

Ted D said...

Michael,

As much as Sterling and his female sidekick make my ears bleed, would have LOVED to have heard that reaction. I'm sure it'll happen to the Papelbot sometime this year, but anytime Rivera blows a save, it's happyhappyjoyjoy time.

If I'm not mistaken, this is your first time visiting this particular nuthouse: welcome aboard. Ignore all my crazy family members: we're all harmless!

Have a great day everyone: I'm off to work.

Tex said...

\\Tex, don't know what happened to you tonight//

lets just say i was peer pressured into going out after my friends son's confirmation party...but no bail money was necessary.

Stacy said...

Hats off to Jackie.

Ted, PLEASE stop telling everyone our family is crazy. Tex will never want to meet any of us, and you're probably scaring the nice people who visit your blog. :)

Ted D said...

Now Tex: don't you think your'e a little too mature to be peer pressured? :)

Tree Newt said...

Stacy, we are crazy. Let's just admit it. We're certifiable. But we're lovable.

Ted D said...

I agree Matt: sorta like the tazmanian devil.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Don't forget wacko, nutjob and brick short of a load! Stacy, its easier to admit all of these than to try and convence people otherwise!

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Tex, and people say they wouldn't want to be a teenager again because of too much peer pressure!

Ted D said...

Bub, judging by the fact you did not return my call today, I'm assuming the fleecing of rich women went well today?

And only 27 comments? What the....

Oh yeah: Kaylees in Mickeyland! :)

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Ted, sorry I didn't get a chance to call you back. The fleecing started hot and heavy this morning. In honor of Newts new pastime I believe I will start refering to him, formerly known as Newt as TOOLTIME!I considered AC/DC but I thought that might be pushing it

Ted D said...

Good to hear Bub. A depressed Scotty is a no fun Scotty.

Another big win today: 7-2, with Beckett going 6 and giving up one run. Boys scored 6 in the first and Papi added another with his 4th homah of the year.

7-4 with a 3 game set in Toronto starting tomorrow.

Christine E. said...

Greetings All!

So, Ted, are ya Pysched youe boy Josh kicked some butt today? A little concerned about his pitch counts, hopefully he can work that out..:-)

It's always nice when Rivera messes up--and I am hopeful that this weekend will be a VERY good one in the Fens..:-)

And there will be guaranteed baseball for the next 3 days! Whooo Hoo!

Hope everyone is well!

Go Sox!

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Thats good, I can start flying my B cap again! I called you back about 6:00 but you didn't answer.
I think Kaylee got grounded from computer and is just to embaressed to say. No one goes to Disneyland in april.

Ted D said...

Christine, I was overly pumped that he is 3-0 for the year: I been stating his case since we got him, which you know. If he keeps this up and Santana stumbles a little bit, could be Cy Young material.

And yep: it's always good when Rivera blows a save. Gives me hope. Dan Patrick was talking today about when he hear's Mo's name, he thinks back to Luis Gonzales and the 2001 series. I always think of Billy Mueller walking off in the "fight game" of 2004.

Glad you popped in: was wondering if you were OK. Kept checking to see if you had a new post up the last few days. Good to hear from you.

I say we take another 3 games from the Jay's.

Ted D said...

Listen bub, you can't be jumping off and jumping on the old wagon: you gotta ride out the rough patches. They make you appreciate days like today!

Ted D said...

Off to watch 24: be back at 10.

Christine E. said...

I'm fine...just a busy weekend.. and then I wanted to wait until after the game to post something...

Thanks for your concern, tho..its nice to be missed...:-)

Where are the chicklets and their genetlemn friends? Or shouldn't I ask? LOL

Billy Mueller was a GOD as far as I was concerned when he hit that homer in 2005 of MO..it was a perfect ending to a perfect game...:-)

And I agree--let's take 3 from Toronto...:-)

Go Sox!

Tex said...

ok so it wasnt peer pressure...I just needed to let my hair down. I was at this pub last night partying...had a good time till all of a sudden I notice my purse is gone from the bar....so I'm asking "Cowboy" and "Surfer Dude" (my bartenders) to ask around...I ask the singer to announce...then I climb onto the bar and stand on it looking around...which got MANY peoples attention :)
Anyway...turns out this guy thought it was his gf's purse and picked it up...one of the guy's I was talking to found it thank goodness. something was said about age and I said something about being older...he bet me he was older...I smiled cos I knew he was NOT my age...we pulled out our id's...I smiled his face in shock cos he is 32. :)

I still got it!!

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

"I still got it!!"

Is it catching?

Christine, It is nice to hear someone ask about the Chicklets, although I have taken a beating from Ted over these fine ladies and I repeat I had nothing to do with them. I am afraid TEd has chased them off .

And Ted for the record 24 is still weak, give your tv a rest.

Oh Ted did I tell you my Kaleigh entered 5 talent events hee ha. I guess you know what you will be doing a cluple of days in jul!

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

{My bad } a couple of days in July!

Ted D said...

Christine,

Missed? are you kidding? with my nutjob family posting here? You are the voice of reason in the desert: a calm, reasoned, intelligent voice coming through all the corn meal, oat bran, and marbles comments. You are ALWAYS welcome here!

Hey Tex! "I still got it". Yes you do young lady. Yes you do. You up on the bar? LOL!

Bub, would you get off my back about 24? BEST. SHOW. EVER. Period.
And you ain't fooling anyone Papa Rooster: I know who them chicklets are, as well as Hank and Earl. I just LOOK stupid Bub.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Do we all get to post our comments twice? You know I could take that to a whole new level!

Where is Soy bean?

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Ted, HIGH TIDE COMING IN!

Christine E. said...

Aw...shucks.... Thank you for the kind words...but who are you calling calm and reasoned? LOL

I realy hope to see Jon Lester pitch again--I thought he was phenomenal last year, a real joy to watch...

Daisuke on the mound tomorrow... whooo hooo!

Sounds like you had a blast, Tex, good for you! :-)

Ted D said...

Well that's just weird. Gotta delete one of those. Nature Boy must be hitting the hay early is all I can say.

Tree Newt said...

Soy Bean/HammerBoy is here...just finished a new post on the Perch. You boys miss me?

Tree Newt said...

I know what it is...you guys run out of ways to dog each other, and you're looking for me to be the goat.

Ted D said...

A new post on the perch?

I'm almost scared to look.

Tree Newt said...

Be afraid...be very afraid.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Nature Boy just got his named scratched from my will. Since he doesn't need any stuff holding him back. HEE HEE HEE!

Tree Newt said...

Bub, you'll live longer than me, anyhow! You're like Keith Richards...forever young.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Well since it is just us boys tonight, I will tell you I am hittin it early tonight.!

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Ok, one more . Keith Richards Hmm. Which one of you two wont to snort my ashes when I am gone!

Tree Newt said...

C'mon bub! Be real...you're worn out from fleecing old ladies all day!

Tree Newt said...

We'll leave that to Rakes.

Tree Newt said...

I'm out, myself. See you all on the flipside.

Ted D said...

You two grandpa's are giving our family a bad name.

Christine, compared to us, you a nobel prize winner. Calm and reasoned with this bunch is a couple of dancers at "Club Male"!

I'm also hoping Lester gets back this year, and am looking forward to the gyroball tomorrow. I know, I know, it doesn't exist, but I still like typing it!

Ted D said...

I don't "wont" to snort anything Bub.

And Corn Muffin, leave Damion out of this: he will get into enough stuff without your help!
