Manny Gives Me Hope. For Rakes.

Manny Ramirez arrived at Spring Training yesterday.

On time.

Manny, who for the past several seasons has made Eddie Murray look like a blabbermouth, is talking to the media.

Seemingly enjoying it.

All the cynics will say this is Manny trying to convince management to exercise his $20 million dollar option for next season early. And that very well could be true. I know if it was ME who was playing for that kind of money, I'd be bringing John Henry breakfast in bed if that's what it took.

That's Manny, though. I believe him when he say's if he's here next year, great. If not, he'll be somewhere else.

Besides Manny has seemingly grown up just a little. And I quote; "You start growing up and mature," the 35-year-old Ramirez said.

Manny being Mature?

All of a sudden, I have a renewed sense of hope for Rakes. Before seeing this new, improved version of Manny, I'd resigned myself to Rakes being a miniature version of Bluto from Animal House for the rest of his life. Unlimited potential, yet never able to get past stuffing packets of mayonaise in his mouth and pretending to be a zit for the rest of his life.

After seeing Manny actually being responsible, accountable, and proclaiming he wants to come back and won't ask for an extension? I realize anything is possible.

Of course, according to my Mom, Rakes came out of playschool today with his sticker for good behavior plastered across his forehead while he rambled on and on about blowing up the rebel base, which doesn't exactly fill my heart with hope.

But it's a start.

Is it too early to start saying "That's just Rakes being Rakes"?

Edge, please tell me you've seen "Animal House". It's one of the all time classic movies.

LOL! Ted...I'm with ya on Manny's maturity being a breath of fresh air. I just finished "Feeding the Monster" (I actually didn't think I'd be interested in the book when I reviewed it online, until I had it in my hands at the bookstore), and let me tell you...It sheds some insight of where Manny has come from in this organization, and where the organization has come from as a whole. Hearing him say he'd like to come back, is starkly differing from the old days (like 01 was really that long ago or something...). Refreshing...VERY refreshing.

Don't tell me that, Tex.

Another 30 years?

And yep; I think we can finally let go of Manny. He's all grown up now.

:: weeps::

Wayne, I've got "Feeding The Monster" and I've read it twice now.

Like you, I wasn't sure I'd like it, but Manny's change is pretty stark, right?

it gives me hope to know that some men DO grow up :p

Tex, I'm glad for that.

Just don't go betting in Vegas it'll be Rakes or me.

I'd hate for you to lose your retirement. :)

he's all growed up

or smartened up realizing if he wanted his extension to be signed....he needed to step it up. which sounds like he's growing up.

Ok, let me just say that Rakes is supposed to act like that, whilst a 35 year old multi-millionaire is not. I'd rather have a 4 year old acting like that than somebody making that kind of jack.

Of course, if Rakes makes it to the majors and brings home 20 mil a year, tell him I'll play Star Wars with him whenever he wants.

// Bluto from Animal House //

GPA? 0.0 John Belushi was the man, R.I.P.

What, you mean you haven't been saying that already? Do try and keep up.

Happy Friday!

No Ted! I can honestly and happily say I've not seen Animal House.

Mattie,

I'm not sure Rakes is SUPPOSED to act like that, but it's more acceptable really. And yes, he's making that kind of scratch, he ca afford to have Mark Hamil come over and play with him. I'm pretty sure he's not doing anything.

Stephen, LOL. "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son." And sorry, I'll try and keep up.

Edge, you don't know what you're missing.

"Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

Edge, you haven't lived yet until you've seen it. Honestly and happily?

oh sweet Manny. A quote I thought that you would enjoy -

"I'm always on time....I might be late two years in a row...but I'm always on time."

Stephen, I love that movie. Knowing Edge personally, now that I think about it, I'm not sure it's for her. However, for my juvenile self, it's perfect.

Krystle, that is PERFECT.
