The Mayor Comes To Boston

He may not get a lot of playing time behind Youk, but word came down today that Sean Casey has signed on to back up Kevin Youkilis at first and come off the bench.

As much as I loved Eric Hinske, his balls out play, and his serial killer smile, hitting around the Mendoza line just wasn't getting it done. Casey, a career .301 hitter, is a big upgrade offensively and is another in a line of quality guys Epstein has built the current team with.

Ortiz, Varitek, Lowell, Wakefield, and Schilling. I gotta think a guy who volunteers at homeless shelters when his team is on the road, was voted friendliest guy in baseball by his peers, and whose nickname is The Mayor, mainly because of his habit of yakking it up with anyone who reaches first base, is gonna fit right in with the Sox clubhouse.

Hal McCoy, a beat writer for the Cincinnati Reds for 35 years, had this to say about Casey:

"There's no debate, and there never will be a debate. Sean Casey is the nicest guy in professional baseball. Ever."

Welcome to Boston, Sean. Enjoy the ride.

Ciera invited her friend Taylor over to spend the night tonight. You know how I said I'd be willing to have a 4th child if you could guarantee me it'd be a girl?

I take it all back. The dynamic of having a 4th child in the house is a bit more than I can handle; between the drama of 2 females, the excessive showing off by Heckle and Jeckle, and the noise level reaching the point where loss of hearing is the next step, I think I'll keep things just the way they are.

In a state of semi-controlled chaos.

I know, Tex. I can't wait either. It's freezing here, but I'm itching to get Ciera and Rakes outside for a catch.

If Kielty doesn't come back, there you go. You've got Casey ready just in case. Cyn talked about it today, but it fires me up when we sign guys with character like Lowell and Casey. It's good to see when the news is dominated with this steroid stuff 24/7.

i refuse to let all that talk mess up a good thing for me. i just hope that players are watching and listening and take heed

heading to bed. Im deat tired.

Ted D said...

I think they are, Tex. And I still say the majority of guys are clean, for the most part.

Night, Tex.

Awww, c'mon Ted. Just one more. Live a little. ;-)

I am pleased with this acquisition. I like Hinske. I wish him well. I will applaud for him when/if he returns to Boston as the road team. I hope he finds better success in Arizona.

Hmmm... yes, he's easy on the eyes too. But no one will ever top my Lowell. ;-)

I really hope we retain Kielty. I liked him immediately.

Ok now we can talk LOST. This guy has a LOST blog, he was linked by Cousin Steve/I Aint No Oprah, and just like John Locke mysteriously coming out of the woods he commented over at my place.

And having Sean Casey will be good, I've seen him play years ago while he was with Cincinnati, outstanding. I don't know how we got him for under a million/year.

I was also thinking: there will now be many opportunities for Casey at the Bat references. Thought I hope the ending turns out better. ;-)

Tex said...

Call me lost but I just don't get LOST. I've tried to watch but it doesnt peak my interest.

Man did I need that long night of sleep last night

I was almost stumped and about ready to grab the yellow pages when I got to thinking. Odd! The only person missing when I didn't think your house was loud, was (YIKES!!) YOU!!!!!!! There you go! How's that Scott? Mattie? Stacy?

Dawn, if I live a little like you suggest, I'll die earlier. Don't they sort of wash each other out? And Hinske was a GREAT guy off the bench and him running over Posada is one of my top 5 moments of last season. I just like Casey's upside a lot better.

Stephen, I can't tell you how glad I am LOST is back on. Only show on TV that gives me goose bumps. The flash forward stuff has really added a lot to it.

Tex, I actually lost interest in season 2, started back in season 3 and then made up the difference. I'll grant you it's not for everybody. Glad you got some rest last night.

Now Edge, are you HONESTLY going to blame ME for the noise? I am the picture of calm and reason at all times.

sean is definitely going to be an asset to our team...but more importantly to the Boston hungry.
i took a different route on him

Ted D said...

He's a quality guy for sure, Tex. You must have done yours this morning.

Since you have come to embrace my role here as the adjatater, does the phrase "get a life" spike your blood pressure? Put down the TV controller and walk away slowly.

~**Dawn**~ said...

I'm sorry, but the almost English major in me just busted a gut at 'adjatater'.

Stacy said...

I think Edge may be on to something. What say you, Tough Guy? :)

Anonymous said...

Me? Blame you? It was just an observation is all. I figured you'd get a kick out of it be it all so comical.

Stacy: Classic response. Nice job!

Ted D said...

"Embrace" may be too strong a term, Bub. Let's say "tolerate" and call it even. Other than 24, LOST, and ball games, I'm not much of a TV watcher anymore. In fact, I'd bet YOUR wife makes you sit and watch all the girly shows with her: am I right?

Dawn, have at him. People think my spelling and grammar is bad, they need to take a peek at some of his stuff.

Stacy, you of all people know what this nuthouse is like. Now you're being just as bad as Scotty is.

Edge, you're on my list now. ;)

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Almost English major, is that kinda like border line Schizophrenic? 24, lost and ballgames. I rest my case.

~**Dawn**~ said...

Actually it was a smart move on my part to switch to majoring in Child Development. But I still know how to spell. ;-)

Tex said...

wait. Scott does manhugs too??

Ted D said...

And YOU watch American Idol.

I rest my case, your honor.

//But I still know how to spell. ;-)//

Dawn, my admiration for you grows each day. ;)

Tex, Scott most definately does NOT do manhugs.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Tex I try to give Ted a man hug every time I see him but he has issues with that kinda thing.

Tex said...

well then whats up with "embrace"?

Ted D said...

You are a stone cold liar, brother in law of mine.

And what is up with "embrace?"

Tree Newt said...

Boy have I missed some fun or what? Dawn cutting on Bub's atrocious ;) spelling; Edge busting on Ted's role in the decibel level at his house, Bub cracking on Ted's aTC viewing habits....all classic. I honestly have nothing profitable to add to this, so I'm pleading the Fifth and getting outta here.

Ted D said...

My role in the decibel level is purely reactionary. Somebody has to maintain this small level of calm we have, right?

Dawn getting after Bub and his spelling may be the highlight of my weekend!

I can't wait to see Sean Casey on our team. I always loved him and pictured him in a Sox uni. He'll fit right in!

13 more days guys, 13 more days...

Ted D said...

Chee, Dawn!

Krystle, at least then we'll get some scenes of guys actually playing ball, right?

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Thank goodness March Madness is around the corner.

What is up with the embrace thing Jr?

Ted D said...

//Since you have come to embrace my role here as the adjatater//

YOU started the embrace thing, Websters. Not me.

March madness? Wake me when it's over.

Krystle [RSO] said...

oh yes. hearing the crack of the bat...the ball going into the catches mitt...stop me I'm daydreaming!

So, how much showing off REALLY did happen? You know boys have to show off their pride somehow! LOL!

Ted D said...

Krystle, you'd have thought they had an audience of 20,000 instead of 1.

Maybe they can join the circus one day.

Krystle [RSO] said...

LOL! They must love an audience =]!

The little guy (my cousin I swear) is the same way. Whenever his aunt has a camera out, he's just a ham. And he's only 14 months old eesk.

Ted D said...

14 months and already like that?

Watch out.

Hi Ted,
Softball and Base ball for the kids starting here. My 13 year old Daughter, Kayla started practice this week...on the field and at the batting cages.
Its great!!!

Was at Sports Authority tonight replacing all the stuff they grew out of.
Great bats and gloves available!!!
I was more excited that my kids!!!

Firs softball game in about 2 weeks...
can you say..BATTER UP?!?!?!?!

Ted D said...

jmp, sounds great!

I'd be like you; more excited than the kids about all the new equipment.

Still no baseball/softball here yet. Rakes will start soccer here in a few weeks with "Coach Bendell", but a lot of catch to be played in the front yard before long.

Have a blast with the kids, man.
