Sometimes The Sun Shines On You.

Ever since I hit the stupid deer on Saturday night I'd been dreading getting the rental car. It's usually some tiny foreign car with a tinny motor, smells like cigarette smoke, and couldn't out run a motorized wheelchair driven by a 87 year old.

So you can imagine my surprise when Henry the Enterprise Agent asks me if a Dodge F150 was OK. OK? For a guy who grew up driving a truck in Oklahoma who has driven a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry the last 15 years or so? Who thought a truck was just something to look at and admire while I drove home from work every night?

Are you KIDDING me?

I could have kissed the guy. As soon as you turn the key the thing sounds like it could run 500 miles at Daytona. Granted, watching me have to take a running start just to get in the thing is high comedy, but once I got in?

Did you know you can get it up to 55mph in about 4 seconds?

There aren't many things you can take to the bank these days. But I can PROMISE you this.

The first stop light I hit in the morning?

I'm rolling down my window and asking the guy in the lane next to me this....

"You got a Hemi in that?"

I'm paraphrasing but it's pretty close.

"Dad. Can you take me to school in that? And why can't you park it in the garage?"

I'm thinking about wearing a cowboy hat and calling myself "Walker" tomorrow.

Perpetuating the stereotype.

Don't ya just love the smell of testosterone in the morning?

Has it got a gun rack?

Can you get the Camry repair to take, say, two or three weeks?

Rich, your jealousy is transparent.

John, no gun rack, but it does have a sliding back window.

And the guy told me 6 days so we'll see. All I know is I feel like I'm driving a school bus when I try to make a left turn. It's gonna be interesting taking Ciera to school this morning.

JMP, it's a pretty sweet ride. Although all things considered I'd rather have my Camry without all the dents and deer hair.

Did you just say a Dodge F-150? ::snickers:: You really weren't meant to be a redneck anyway, were you?

A number of years ago, I got a thrill out of driving the boss's Dakota, almost as big as the Ram. With a plow on the front- now that was fun, playing with the plow controls. RRRR EEEE RRRR... I was The Man.

Redbeard, it's a Dodge something or other. It's big, fast, and I look utterly stupid climbing in it.

But man is it fun.

Hey if I had money to blow and didn't mind burning fuel like a Jersey refinery, a truck would be top of my list for driving. King of the Road!!!

Ted D said...

Exactly. You can buy 'em CHEAP now.

This will be the one time the car will be ready *sooner* than estimated.
