What was Tek THINKING?

*If you like the picture, see Kelly*

Back in 2004, Doug Mientkiewicz ended up with the ball that represented the last out in the first World Series title in 86 years for the Red Sox. To call what happened in the ensuing months controversial wouldn't do it justice; you would have thought Eyechart had made off with the Holy Grail, Mona Lisa, and Manny's lucky underwear all at the same time.

So when Jonathan Papelbon struck out Seth Smith to end the 2007 World Series and Jason Varitek, the esteemed Captain, stuck it in his back pocket on his way to the mound, you gotta figure all is well.

Even the announcers commented on it, noting there would be no controversy this time around. I mean, who better to be entrusted with such a valuable piece of history than Tek, right?

Turns out he must have had one too many bottles of champagne while celebrating and the ball ended up back with Papelbon. How else do explain the fact the most respected player in the Sox locker room gave THAT ball back to a guy who danced in his underwear on the field, sported a Bud Light box on his head, and by all appearances is nuttier than an out house rat?

After nearly 2 months of wondering what happened to the ball, the truth is finally out: does it honestly surprise anyone that Pap's dog ate the freaking ball?

Of course it did.

It was probably wearing a Kibbles-n-Bits box on it's head at the time.

no DOUBT TED...and all the while it was gnawing away at the ball it was thinking "mmmmmmm BACON mmmmmm"

Kibbles and bits, kibbles and bits...

How I can remember that stupid commercial and not remember what Angie told me to get at the grocery store 1 minute later I'll never be able to explain.

This whole story cracks me up. What did Tek THINK was going to happen? Pap would all of a sudden become responsible and encase it in steel for the Hall of Fame?

Tex said...

well he was thinking it deserved to be with the Pitcher who closed the game?? but he forgot to give it to Papelbon the steely eyed Closer...he gave it to Papelrock the crazyeyed man on the mound

Ted D said...

I stand by my original statement:

Tek was HAMMERED, otherwise he'd never give that ball to Pap!

Tex said...

maybe someone stuffed something other than tobacco in those cigars they were smoking

Ted D said...

Well, there have been those rumors about Manny, which he didn't help the year he picked "I Wanna Get High" as his music when he came to the plate.

Tree Newt said...

You know what? It cracks me up to hear this because maybe, just maybe, Pap realizes it's just a game and that having the ball or not really doesn't matter. They did it: they won it all. And, hey! How many guys can say their dog ate a piece of history?

Now if he was fortunate enough to have, say, a Crystal Commemorative Baseball, like some lucky people, this never would have happened.

Does anyone know anyone who has a Crystal Commemorative World Series Baseball? ;) :D

Ted, great blog and I LOVE and adore today's picture! Memories of good times...

JET said...

Hey, what kind of neighborhood is this? Someone stole my picture of Terence Mann!

Ted D said...

Thanks JET, and you are a lady of your word! Hmm..., WHO would have a Crystal Commemorative Baseball, or as I like to call it, that crystal thing? ;)

And that is strange: what happened to James Earl's picture?

JET said...

OK, I reloaded him. But I'm watching you people...

Hey I love the rotating pics! You are a prodigy Ted.

//or as I like to call it, that crystal thing? ;) //
That, my friend, was classic. :D

Ted D said...

JET, I think it was Tex's fault. ;)

Yeah, I'm sort of amazed I figured that you too.

I've found that "thing" covers almost everything!

JET said...

//JET, I think it was Tex's fault. ;)//

She's at the top of my list. But you're a close second...

You helped me think of another thing to add to my list of 'great Sox things that happened to JET in 2007'...I got a ball signed by Jonathan Papelbon! Now I'll have to check it more carefully for dog drool or bitemarks.

Ted D said...

As long as I'm not first, I'm OK with that. ;)

And you are a lucky woman getting a Papelbon ball. Like you said, just make sure Boss didn't get ahold of it.

JET said...

Well, I just went back and checked her blog. The theft appears to have occurred there.

Heading out to do a little shopping. See ya soon!

::backs out of room so nothing else gets stolen::

Tex said...

\\JET, I think it was Tex's fault. ;)//

Ted D said...

See ya' JET. And Merry Christmas!

Tex, it's just so easy to blame you for everthing!

JET said...

Well, you know how sneaky Texans are.

JUST kidding Tex! You know I love ya. And I just saw a PERFECT gift for you at the store. It was a calendar called 'Studs-N-Spurs'. I found a link for it, scroll down to see it:

Ted D said...

JET, I'm sure our favorite Texan will appreciate it. However, I'm not going near a link with "Studs-N-Spurs' in it with a 10 foot pole. ;)

JET said...

Baby.

Ted D said...

Yes I am.

Tex said...

nothing says christmas like studs in spurs. Thanks JET :)

Ted D said...

I'm a chicken for not wanting to look at what I imagine is half nekkid cowboys?

I iz smartz, not chicken.

JET said...

//I iz smartz, not chicken.//

OK, OK. It's sad tho, I think. You don't know what you're missing...

Ted D said...

JET, I love ya and you are a good friend.

But I'm not gonna look at the half nekkid cowboys.

On principle.

Tex said...

Outsmarted again.

Tex said...

JET said...

Half nekkid cowboys are good for what ails you.

JET said...

Truly they are. ------------>

Ted D said...

Tex, it's weird though. That one worked but I tried 5 others that I've used before that didn't. Who knows.

But I'll look forward to the slide show nearly a YEAR after you took them. ;)

//Truly they are. ------------>//

Eeeww.

Tex said...

She used to be sweet. I think you are rubbing off on her.

JET said...

//She used to be sweet. I think you are rubbing off on her.//

LOL!

OK, no more teasing my good friend Ted who suffers from nekkid cowboy phobia.

::feels pity for Ted::

Ted D said...

I don't believe you have any pity for me whatsoever. :)

Tex said...

oh Puhleeeeeeezeee Ted's gonna pull the pity card?? im sure angie would enjoy the half nekkid cowboy calendar.

Ted D said...

I didn't pull the pity card, JET did!

And I'll agree with you: Ang would indeed enjoy the cowboys.

JET said...

//I didn't pull the pity card, JET did!//

I felt pity for you because you cannot enjoy the wonders of a half nekked cowboy. ;D

Ted, who is Angie's favorite player?

Tex said...

\\Ted, who is Angie's favorite player?//

and Ted now that you've lured JET over here to post all on yours and now mine is abandoned... :P

JET said...

Tex! You just made me laugh so hard I hurt my back again.

You two are like a coupla kids, I swear. :)

This is great fun, but I don't know how you do it. I have a hard enough time keeping up with SG most days. Today's been perfect cause I've been home most of the day preparing for Christmas. And it's so fun goofing off with you two...here or at the crazy red-socked-Texas blog!

Tex said...

LOL!! good I made you laugh JET...it worked. its true Ted and I are like two kids...but he's a bigger kid than i am :)

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Well it is less than a week till Christmas and the State Police have not called to see if I will vouch for a mini van driven by two midgets and a prom queen with a couple tied up in the back. So I guess this means you are not coming out for Christmas. Plus the Dinkster has weenied out on coming out also.

So we will start the party with out you. If I can drive the Trail of Tears I know you can do it.

Ted D said...

JET, the Captain is Angies favorite player, along with Papi.

Sorry I left: Ang and I got to finally go out to eat for our anniversary and Mom is putting the boys down. Tex, I didn't LURE her over here: I just commented that your blog was good enough for her but not mine. So I think you could say I GUILTED her over. ;)

And JET, I can honestly say there is nobody I'd rather goof off with than you and Tex. Maybe Scott. And NO, Tex, YOU are a bigger kid than I am.

Bub, nope: not this year. As much as I'd like to, we're keeping it in NC this time around. As far as Mattie goes, don't you think he's had enough vacation time this year? ;)

Tex said...

\\And NO, Tex, YOU are a bigger kid than I am.//

::shoves Ted and hits him in the arm::

No YOU ARE! guilt/lure: pots and kettles and all that (to quote someone)

Ted D said...

::Whacks Tex on top of the head with bookbag::

NO, YOU are.

Tree Newt said...

I KNEW I was going to get dogged by you boys for this. Bub, you know I would love to come out there. We'd planned on it all year. We DIDN'T plan on having to shell out cash for the little one's hospital stay the week before Christmas. Also didn't plan on the Mrs. getting an inner-ear infection.

Plus, my boss says I have no more vacation time.

He, on the other hand, can't use that excuse. He never vacates. Never. Has he mentioned that he never takes a vacation? Yeah, not once this year. Nope. Not at all. Man, he's a machine.

Ted D said...

Listen slacker: I have no issues with your mountain vacation, your 3 day work weeks, and your trip to Disney. And if you could get to OK and back next week, no problems.

And I feel for you on Baby C and Amanda, so you can stop with the sob stories. ;)

But yes, I did NOT take a vacation this year. I. Am. Legend.

Did I tell you I'm shipping up to Boston in May?

JET said...

Children, behave.
Time outs for both of you.

::separates Tex and Ted::

Ted D said...

Aww, c'mon JET. SHE started it.

And Matt is just egging her on.

Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door said...

Ok you two wankers. Just for you.

One week in Orlando 1000.00
Doubleheader in Boston 500.00

CHRISTMAS WITH BUB, PRICELESS !

Ted D said...

You're right Bub: it's priceless!!

And who is Adam and which one of you talked to him, 'cause I didn't.
